In our own time features works from the Latrobe Regional Gallery Collection and invited artists, brought together through diverse mediums and perspectives to engage with notions of leisure, recreation, and the personal rituals we undertake in our spare time.

How do we spend our moments of pause, when we are free from productivity, obligation or urgency? From slow acts of making to scenes of everyday leisure, the works speak to a yearning for calm, introspection and joyful discovery. Considering the duality of solitude and connection, many of the works reflect on how we care for ourselves and one another, and what it means to create intentional time and space to do so.

In our own time was conceived in response to the increasingly blurred boundaries between work and rest in contemporary life. As the pressures of productivity persist and personal time becomes more fragmented, this exhibition invites viewers to consider how creativity, memory and presence can emerge when we step away from constant output and into moment of stillness or play.

My curatorial approach aimed to present a conversation between works that speak not only to recreation in the traditional sense (such as games, pastimes, and outdoor activities) but also to the quieter forms of self-connection and renewal. Some works recall nostalgic pastimes, while others prompt new ways of seeing the ordinary.

The exhibition affirms the time we use to reflect, connect and imagine and is a reminder of the agency we have over our time, and the importance of claiming it in ways that nourish the self and the collective.
