Spectral Sea

Kim McDonald

17.06.23 - 17.09.23

Spectral Sea is solo exhibition by South Gippsland artist Kim McDonald, whose practice is an embodied exploration of printmaking processes.

In an ongoing series, Kim McDonald creates monoprints and ghost prints, harnessing the unique and experimental nature of the printing process, and in doing so reflecting upon her surrounding coastal environment close to home.

The expressive mark-making amidst deep and moody hues in McDonald’s prints capture psychological and physical states of being, body memory, touch, movement. They are both ghosts of sensory experiences and traces of oceanic power and flux.

Within the framed monoprints and the spaces in between are offerings and echoes of dualities resonant in the world, internal and external, stirring and still. In an untitled monoprint on rice paper that spans almost the entire length of the wall in the gallery, McDonald invites viewers to walk a short journey across the space, finding traces of land and sea, like a flickering film of blue waves.

In response to Spectral Sea, Gabriella programmed a performance by dance collective InPlay Projects, which was performed in the exhibition space by Jasmine Susic, Jarween Wee, Vourneen Ní Cáinin and Alex Katsourakis. A soundtrack was also developed for the performance by Lou Wheeler.

Curated by Gabriella Duffy.
